The Neglected Patients

The Covid Pandemic currently creating havoc to health and economic sectors.

As the saying health is wealth.

When health is affected by this pandemic, the wealth will deplete along with it.

The health sector worldwide focusing on fighting and containing the spread of this highly contagious infection.

True enough millions are infected by this virus with mild to severe infection and thousands are succumbing to this contagious disease.

Though most of them dying from this infection are elderly or have associated chronic metabolic, cardiac, renal, or other comorbidities despite worldwide exhaustive care and vaccination against this virus.

However, the most saddening part is many more patients are dying due to chronic diseases, old age, and malignant diseases during this period with no viral infection.

These patients are unable to get regular follow-up at the clinics, further investigations, medication adjustment, and ward admission to optimize their conditions as before the Covid Pandemic.

Unfortunately, the extremely stretched medical sector in our country, or for that matter worldwide is fighting the ever-increasing number of cases due to virulent viral infection day by day.

Malaysia falls under developing country being economically stable. The life expectancy of the population has increased along with metabolic and chronic systemic diseases. Before this pandemic, these patients had good medical treatment and follow-up under the health care system. As such their lives could be prolonged and given quality health care.

However, at current times there is no time to care for this group of patients with lockdowns and priority to treat and contain the Covid infection.

Thus these patients are silently dying at home or reaching hospitals with many difficulties due to restriction of movement with a late stage of their chronic diseases. At times non-availability of regular clinic follow-up, inability to treat as inpatients since most of the beds are taken up for treatment of the Covid patients and exhausted medical personnel.

It is a stressful situation for the medical fraternity for unable to help this group of patients and in the community as most of them would have someone succumbed to the chronic disease, old age, or the virus infection.
