Unnecessary or Necessary Surgery
It is tough for any surgeons to balance between necessary and unnecessary surgeries.
The onus on the surgeons to do the best for the patients amid many loopholes which at times the surgeons may use for their benefits rather than patients without their knowledge.
The safety and well-being of all patients should be of paramount importance. Hence it is important that the medical profession most stringently regulated. However the medical profession and the way it deals with medical errors seems to be shrouded in mystery and secrecy. It appears they lack integrity, accountability, and transparency.
It is a difficult rope to walk on necessary and unnecessary procedures. As most of the surgeons invariably would have done a surgery which may not be necessary.
For example as a surgeon if we haven’t done enough hemithyroidectomy. Then we may increase the number of hemithyroidectomies by convincing patients for the operation to gain enough confidence and experience. Once we achieved enough experience, we may advise conservative if situation permit.
The other example is appendicectomy. If we have junior surgeons who haven’t done enough appendicectomy during their calls or in charge in the ward. Our rate of diagnosing appendicitis will increase in order to give a chance for our junior colleagues to do more of that procedure.
Though we err on one side or another, we must not have any intention to do harm or doing for any personal benefits.
We should not allow the senses to do whatever they wish or the mind to do whatever it wishes.
We should only do that which is in accordance with our conscience and good intention. If it is not in accordance with the conscience and good intention , we should not do it.
