The Nurse Who Touched My Heart
The gift was given by my long serving matron Vimala.
We were serving together at Bukit Mertajam Hospital for past 20 over years.
She being a passionate and caring nurse who is very much keen to help the palliative patients in the unit which was establishes at BMH. At the time it was run mainly by nurses and a medical officer of OPD.
She pulled me into the service by presenting the plight of palliative unit and a need of specialist to guide.
As I was a visiting surgeon to BMH.I took interest in this new service noticing the enormous enthusiasm of this nurse and the infant state of the palliative unit at BMH.
She enhanced her knowledge n honed the skills of caring the palliative patients by attending various courses and getting training attached to other hospitals with palliative service. In order to give better service to this group of terminally ill patients in her primary hospitalof work.
With progressing years of working at palliative ward. She improved the service and trained many staff nurses and junior doctors to get interested in the care of palliative patients. The health providers must be prepared to face the end of life of their patients.
It is difficult field of service to any doctors or nurses. One should be emotionally composed, passionate,
empathetic and strong hearted.
This nurse had all the above qualities. She grow in years with age treating this patients and along the way she reached the highest post of nursing that is matron.
Finally she came to the end of the road which is, time to retire.
The service she rendered is invaluable.
It was a splendid years of working with this cheerful and patient centred nurse.I will treasure this memory in my journey of life as a doctor.
I wish her all the best, for her post retirement plan.May she be blessed with a good health and many more years to serve the community in the future.
Noble calling.
