Training A Surgeon By Aditaya Kumar,Neurosurgeon

Training surgeons is stressful and operating is a privilege. 7 pieces of advice to get the most from your trainers.

1/ Build a Reputation for Reliability

Reliability will get you far. If your trainer knows they can count on you to get work done, it frees their bandwidth to focus on your training. Being reliable is free and doesn't require any talent or skill.

2/ Swallow a Toad for Your Boss

We all have things we have to do, but don't like to do. Watch your boss, see what they struggle with and learn to do it yourself. Take something off their plate and you will be rewarded in turn.

3/ Figure It Out

At the start of your training everything is new. What's simple for others is complex for you. Becoming someone who is able to figure out any problem is a gold. Ask key questions, speak to your peers, do the work.

This + reliability = people want to train you.

4/ Do the Basics to a High Standard

Dressing well, being on time, standing straight, speaking clearly and doing what you say are under-rated. This will add to "The Halo Effect" around you. The basics are the basics for a reason.

5/ Be In the Right Room at the Right Time

Get to theatre early and make sure everything is ready. Knock on your trainer's door to ask an in-depth question instead of calling. Both liberate time with your trainer for off-the-cuff teaching and educational side conversations.

6/ Work Hard then Smart

Working smart is great, but working hard first is better. Build a reputation of working hard and have pride in your work. This will become obvious to others and gain their respect. New opportunities will come as a result. Then you can work smart.

7/ Pay It Forward

At the end of your training you will start to train others in theatre. Pass on your mistakes, tips and tricks. Expect nothing in return.

We all agreed to train the next generation of doctors and surgeons. Set the standard and put people on your shoulders.

If your trainer notices, great. You may be given more training opportunities. If they didn't, great. You're preparing yourself to be the trainer one day.

Summary to get the most from your trainers:

- Figure it out

- Pay it forward

- Work hard then smart

- Swallow a toad for your boss

- Build a reputation for reliability

- Do the basics to a high standard

- Be in the right room at the right time
