Yester Years Skilled Medical Officers

I still vividly remember almost four decades ago,I reported as a junior medical officer in the department of surgery in Penang General Hospital. 

During early 90's there was ony one state surgeon who is on call for 365 days and working round the clock. We all know the surgeon with all his effort can't treat all the loads of patients coming to government Hospital.As such the medical officer is promoted to registrar and he carries the burden of treating the other patients which the specialist can't cope.

During that time we had a wonderful  sr medical officer who was our registrar of surgery in surgical department,who could do all types of surgery as good as the surgeon.

In fact we honed our  surgical skill from him rather than the specialist.Beside he will guide us patiently through the operation, even if takes hours for us to complete.

Though we learned most of our skills from him and later we sat for our postgraduate fellowship exams and we passsed to continue our career as a surgeon. 

He was the senior medical officer of the department of surgery since unfortunately he couldn't  clear the postgraduate  fellowship examination.

At later stage of his career, the ministry of health came with promoting this skillful medical officer to administrstive section as a director of  district hospitals. Thus he was sent as a director of  Kulim n Sungai Petani hospital.

He was one of the director of hospital, who use to drop at emergency department of the hospital to do minor surgery and procedures whenever he gets time inbetween his administrative duties.

Dr.Idrus was  very dedicated to his work that he married at his late forties due to his work commitments.

Later part in my life,- I come across of him in a water park with his 2 small kids around 5 yrs old that was around 15 yrs back.As  I was at the water park with  my family.

I lost touch with him after that; he must be in mid seventies  by now.

He was the only director of hospital offering his surgical skill,whenever he had sometime to spare inbetween his administrative responsibilities 

It is very difficult to find such a dedicated medical officer who could do a high standard of surgical operations and care of patients as equal or better than specialists, with such humbleness.

Life Lesson From Scuba Diving

As I was diving this time around at Surin islands at Thailand.I  realised diving teaches us to lead our life journey. At the beginning of diving,we need to jump into the ocean,as in human life ,we come out of the womb. Then we submerge to the depth of ocean with excitation and full of energy to see the flora  and fauna of sea,the wonderful terrain of underwater and the push and pull of the current of ocean. As in life a child growing into adulthood. There is lot to see and experience and have fun. Then time,energy and air saps out from the diver and the diver need to ascend to lower depth towards the surface of sea.As human life we cross manhood to elderly. Flag Raising Fiasco

Today, as I took my car out to get lunch, I was overcomed by a sad feeling in regards to this years merdeka in our beloved country. For past years of my life, I have watched with excitement of my neighbours hanging our Malaysian flag with pride and joy celebrating the national day in unison. In the past, when I drove on the road,I used to notice many cars with flags of various sizes with no fear of enforcement or if others would find fault in them for hanging the flags. However, with independence day around the corner, I can't see any flags flying in my neighbourhood or on the road as it used to be. It was more devastating to notice my neighbour who used to hang the flag a month ahead with full pride, respect, and veneration from the time I've known him hasn't done it till now.
